AboCoders

AboCoders is removing obstacles to a productive and prosperous life for young women from low income families in underserved communities in Nigeria.

Project Background

AboCoders is the flagship project of Aspilos Foundation, launched in October 2015. Developed under our Livelihoods thematic area, focused on economic empowerment. AboCoders also complements our work in Governance by promoting equality and active citizenship.

At the heart of AboCoders is a belief best captured by the words of former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon:

tech for governance

AboCoders

AboCoders is creating a pathway for young women, particularly those in Northern Nigeria, to harness technology for personal and community growth. We are directly addressing these critical challenges:

  • Limited access to income-generating opportunities for women, especially in Northern Nigeria.
  • Low technology penetration in Northern Nigeria, making it harder for women to thrive.
  • Underrepresentation of women in tech, with even lower rates in the north.
  • Limited access to technology as a tool for education and career advancement.
  • Lack of interest among young women in pursuing technology-related fields.

Through training, mentorship, and community building, AboCoders is not just teaching skills we, are opening doors, changing mindsets, and sparking a ripple effect of empowerment that transforms lives and communities.

What Happens after our Students Graduate?

Our students after graduation are inducted into the AboCoders community. This community offers a lifetime membership unless the student decides to cease to be a member. The objective of the community is to provide mentorship, continuous training opportunities, and work/internship opportunities for its members.
We also support our alumni with work/learning space in all our pysical centers (academies).
These alumni usually grow to become self-sufficient within a time frame of 3-6 months.

Web Developement

Students under this track are exposed to learning Frontend development using HTML, CSS, Javascript, React and WordPress. Over 400 girls have been empowered under this track between 2016 and the present, with a record of over 30% of them gaining internships or jobs offers through our mentorship and community support.

Data Science

Students enrolled for this track are trained to be positioned for the evolving interdisciplinary field of Data Science.
Some of the participants have reported going further to pursue an academic qualification in the track and equally securing high-prospects career opportunities.

Product Design

Despite being  a relatively newly introduced track, and presently being offered in only our Kaduna and Minna training centers;

we have been able to train over 100 young girls on graphic design, product design and animations under this track.
