AboCoders

AboCoders is removing obstacles to a productive and prosperous life for young women from low income families in underserved communities in Nigeria.

The project improves the lives of its beneficiaries by providing secure and sustainable livelihoods for them through  ICT training and professional mentorship for building sustainable careers in technology.

Project Background

AboCoders is the flagship project of the organization (Aspilos Foundation) launched in October, 2015. It is developed under the organization’s ‘livelihoods’ theme  (i.e economic empowerment) which compliments the ‘Governance’ thematic area.

The project objectives and activities are succinctly informed and captured by the quote;  “Equality for women and girls is not only a basic human right, it is a social and economic imperative. Where women are educated and empowered, economies are more productive and strong. Where women are fully represented, societies are more peaceful and stable.” – Ban Ki-Moon, UN Secretary-General. This project promotes the vision of the organization which is an Africa of young active citizens maximizing opportunities to foster economic progress thereby giving rise to a poverty-free continent.

Abocoders is giving young women opportunities to foster economic progress for themselves and their communities. The project is solving the following specific challenges:

  • Limited access of women to good income-generating opportunities, especially women in Northern Nigeria
  • Low technology penetration in Northern Nigeria
  • Low rate of women in technology, a rate which is even lower in the north
  • Limited access of women to technology for education and career growth
  • Lack of interest of young women in technology

Our goal

Our goal is to empower over 2500 young women from low-income communities in Nigeria by the end of 2023. We aim to achieve this by conducting relevant training, and providing access to further learning opportunities while also creating employment opportunities for our target audience.

Our focus areas

Web Developement

Students under this track are exposed to learning Frontend development using HTML, CSS, Javascript, React and WordPress.

Over 400 girls have been empowered under this track between 2016 and the present, with a record of over 30% of them gaining internships or jobs offers through our mentorship and community support.

Data Science

Students enrolled for this track are trained to be positioned for the evolving interdisciplinary field of Data Science.

Some of the participants have reported going further to pursue an academic qualification in the track and equally securing high-prospects career opportunities.

Product Design

Despite being  a relatively newly introduced track, and presently being offered in only our Kaduna and Minna training centers; we have been able to train over 100 young girls on graphic design, product design and animations under this track.

AboCoders Community

What happens after our students graduate?

Our students after graduation are inducted into the AboCoders community. This community offers a lifetime membership unless the student decides to cease to be a member. The objective of the community is to provide mentorship, continuous training opportunities, and work/internship opportunities for its members.

We also support our alumni with work/learning space in all our pysical centers (academies).

These alumni usually grow to become self-sufficient within a time frame of 3-6 months.

AboCoders Academies

While we offer virtual classes, we also have physical academies where we provide access to laptops, electricity, internet and workspace to our present and past beneficiaries for free.

With a little bit of Web Development background, I joined the Data Science track at AboCoders. AboCoders linked me up with a Web Development job due to my side experience with WordPress, which i took courageously while I enrolled for the Web Development track again to strengthen my skills.
